Winter weather affects your car in lots of costly and frustrating ways. Obviously, cold temperatures make it more difficult to start your car. Your car’s battery can be negatively impacted by the cold weather and the stress it places on that battery to fire up each time you start your car. There’s another issue that cold weather can cause, and it doesn’t get as much thought or attention as it should–your tire pressure.
Temperature changes–heat and cold–cause changes to the tire pressure for your car’s tires. Hot weather causes your tires to expand. In fact, for every 10 degrees Fahrenheit increase in temperature, your car’s tires to increase by 1-2 pounds of pressure. In the winter, it’s the opposite. In the winter, cold temperatures cause your tires to lose PSI. In the winter, you can expect your tires to lose one PSI per a 10-degree drop in temperature. In St. Louis, that drop can be pretty steep.
Make sure you check your tires’ PSI regularly, especially when there’s a big drop or increase in temperatures. Driving on underinflated or overinflated tires not only reduces tread life, but it also affects your safety. Make sure your tires are properly inflated and check for treadwear. Drive safely.
The sudden drop in St. Louis temperatures can make starting your St. Louis car, truck, or van, much more difficult. Cold temperatures tax your auto battery and alternator.
It’s important to make sure your car is ready for winter. Cyclone Car Care, your trusted and trained St. Louis auto mechanics, are ready to help you winterize your car.
In addition to making sure your battery is in good running order, it’s a great idea to also check your antifreeze, radiator, tires, windshield wipers and more. Old man winter can make it tough to start your ride.
Here are some of the things we look for when we’re preparing your car for winter:
- Snow Tires. Snow tires are designed especially for the rigors and demands of winter driving.
- Inspect your hoses and belts. Your hoses and belts take a beating all year, but especially during winter.
- Check the antifreeze. The antifreeze is the lifeblood of your heating and cooling system.
- Check tire pressure. For each 10 degrees drop in temperature, your tires lose approximately a pound of air.
- Check your battery. Cold weather taxes your battery. Make sure your battery will start your car quickly.
Also, consider preparing a winter driving emergency kit. Some of the things you might want to keep in your car include the following:
- A warm blanket.
- A first aid kit.
- An ice scraper with a snow brush.
- Flares, reflectors or a flashlight.
- Rock salt, kitty litter, sand or some other substance for traction.
- A snow shovel.
- Jumper cables.
- Extra winter clothing like boots or gloves.
Keep safe this winter and make sure your ride is ready to power through winter. Cyclone Car Care can help you prepare to keep your car, van, truck or fleet, on the road all winter.

In addition to the devastation and misery, our friends in Texas may experience after Hurricane Harvey, there will also be a big hit on oil production and refinery capacity. This will most likely increase prices at the pump. Gas prices have been very low in the last few months, but that could change in the blink of an eye. Now may be the time to consider any auto maintenance that you’ve been putting off. Keep your tires inflated, have routine oil changes, keep your filters clean and make sure you get your car, van or truck tuned up. Cyclone Car Care can help you keep your car in top performance and getting the most from every gallon of gas.
If you’re a St. Louis driver, you’ve probably noticed that gas prices are pretty low. Of course, low prices is all relative. Historically, however, gas prices haven’t been this low in almost over a decade. Strangely, gas consumption is actually down. Americans are driving less. Some of this is attributable to more and more people telecommuting or working from home offices. Well, for most St. Louisans, a car, truck or van is still a necessity. At Cyclone Car Care, we can keep your ride on the road longer and help you improve gas mileage through routine maintenance and recommended services. Getting the most out of every gallon of gas and saving money never goes out of style. And, just remember, what goes down, can go up.
Cyclone Car Care, your St. Louis mechanics, want to take this opportunity to wish you and yours a safe and fantastic Thanksgiving.
